July is summer in the North of Vietnam, the hot and dry season in the Central Coast of Vietnam, the rainy season in the Central Highlands and South of Vietnam. June and July are the two hottest month in the North and the Central Coast of Vietnam.
July is a great time for family holidays and beach vacations on the Con Dao Islands and the Phu Quoc Island off the shore of southern Vietnam. During this time the sun shines everyday, the sea is calm and clear, it rains for only half an hour daily then stops, and the temperatures are pleasant (26-31oC).
The winds which affect Vietnam in July include:
- The Southeasterly Wind in the North of Vietnam which causes rain and nice temperatures.
- Westerly/Southwesterly Wind in the extreme Northwest of Vietnam, sometimes in the lowlands in the North, in much of the Central Coast of Vietnam which is also known as the foehn wind that causes heat strikes in these regions;
- Southwesterly Wind in the Central Highlands and the South of Vietnam which is moist and pleasant and which causes daily short-lived rain;
The Southwesterly Wind helps to make up the rainy season in the Central Highlands and South of Vietnam and nice temperatures in these regions in July; it is the same wind that causes hot and dry weather in the Central Coast of Vietnam and parts of North Vietnam due to the foehn effect.
In July the Northeast of Vietnam has occasional rain, sunshine and often pleasant temperatures (25-33oC). The Northwest of Vietnam often has heat strikes and strong sun, heavy occasional rain (26-370C). The lowlands of northern Vietnam have mixed heat strikes, pleasant temperatures and t-storms (28-37oC).
The Central Coast has some rain, but mostly strong sun and high temperatures (28-38oC). The northern region (to the north of the Hai Van Pass) of the Central Coast from Thanh Hoa to Hue often has higher temperatures and heat strikes. The region to the south of the Central Coast from Da Nang to Phu Yen often has bright sunshine and nicer temperatures (25-35/36oC).
The Central Highlands often have daily rain and nice temperatures (20-28oC).
The South of Vietnam has daily rain and nice temperatures (24-33oC).
Both the Con Dao Islands and Phu Quoc Island have nice weather with sun, clouds, daily short-lived rain, pleasant temperatures (26-31oC).
Below is our review of the weather in Vietnam in July 2020.
1/ July 2020 started when seasonal rain put an end to a long heat strike in the North and Central Coast of Vietnam. For much of the first half of the first week, there were isolated t-storms and rain in the lowlands, heavy rains in the far northern mountains. There were serious landslides in Lao Cai and Lai Chau; there was a flash flood in Muong Khuong (Lao Cai) which swept away livestock of local residents. The temperatures in the Central Coast remained high (28-35/36) though better than in June.
The Central Highlands and South of Vietnam enjoyed typical rainy season weather: daily short-lived rain and very pleasant temperatures (20-27oC and 25-31oC respectively).
2/ The second week of July 2020 started with a heat strike in the North and the Central Coast of Vietnam with high temperatures above 36-40oC. There were some t-storms in the far northern mountains. The temperatures were nice in the extreme Northwest (Son La, Dien Bien and Lai Chau) though. In the middle of the second week heavy rain in Lai Chau caused landslides on several roads; a flash flood at Tan Uyen destroyed agricultural crops and houses. It was mostly dry in the lowlands in the North and in the Central Coast.
The Central Highlands and South of Vietnam had typical weather of the rainy season: daily short-lived rain and pleasant temperatures. The weather was nice on the Phu Quoc Island and Con Dao Islands with daily short-lived rain and nice temperatures; there were strong winds on some day on these islands.
3/ In the third week of July, the regional weather patterns in Vietnam was mostly similar to the second week: hot and dry in the lowlands of the North and in the Central Coast; t-storms with some heavy rain in the far northern mountain; t-storms and pleasant temperatures in the Central Highlands and South of Vietnam.
But at the end of the third week, there was heavy rain all over the North putting and end to a long heat strike. Ha Giang and Lao Cai were flooded. Route 2 between Tuyen Quang and Ha Giang was blocked by a serious landslide. A flash flood and landslide at Hoang Su Phi of Ha Giang caused human life.
4/Torrential rain in the last week of July made parts of Lao Cai City flooded. On the same day a t-storm with strong gusts of wind raged through Ha Tinh bringing down power poles and houses.
At the end of the month there was torrential rain in Dak Lak which made several parts of the province flooded.
Out on the East Vietnam Sea, a tropical depression (No.2 in Vietnam in 2020) was making its way towards the shore of the Central Coast. July 2020 ended with clouds, t-storms and pleasant temperatures in all of Vietnam.
