April is spring with pleasant weather in most of the North of Vietnam; dry and warm season in the extreme Northwest of Vietnam; the dry and warm season in the Central Coast of Vietnam; the dry and hottest season in the Central Highlands and South of Vietnam.
The Northeast of Vietnam and the lowlands of North Vietnam often have dry weather with pleasant temperatures (16-30oC in the mountains and 20-32oC in the lowlands). April is a great time for adventures in this region including: car adventures, trekking tours in Ba Be National Park and Cao Bang.
The eastern side of the Northwest of Vietnam often has dry and sunny weather with pleasant temperatures of 18-30oC. Sometimes parts of this region may be under the influence of the foehn wind which may makes temperatures in Yen Bai and Lao Cai reach 35-36oC. You may want to consider a family adventure in Mai Chau or Pu Luong Nature Reserve or go trekking in Hang Kia this month.
The extreme Northwest of Vietnam often has strong sun, dry weather with hot temperatures at mid day which is due to strong influence of the foehn wind. The temperatures are from 19-37oC. This month is still good for car adventures, motorbike tours in this region but avoid visiting places at mid day.
The Central Coast of Vietnam has dry weather, strong sun and often hot temperatures in April. The hottest temperatures are often found in Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Hue and Quang Ngai which could be from 22-40oC. The high temperatures above 35oC are attributed to strong foehn wind. April is the best time of the year for beach holidays in the Central Coast of Vietnam.
The Central Highlands are deep in the dry season in April and the region often suffer from serious droughts due to lack of water. Parts of the Central Highlands including Kon Tum and Dak Lak may have hot temperatures at mid day in April which is also due to that it is often located to the southeastern corner of a hot air region (air trough).
Thanks to high altitudes that high temperatures are found mostly at mid day; and it is chilly in the early morning, late afternoon and in the evening; it is pleasant mostly at the other times of the day. It is only hot at mid day that you should avoid outdoor activities like cycling or trekking, but all activities are ok at the other times of the day.
The South of Vietnam has the hottest temperatures in April: strong sun every, hot and humid, no rain. In April the Southwesterly Monsoon has not blown yet and the South of Vietnam is located to the southeastern corner of a hot-temperature air trough as the Central Highlands. The South of Vietnam, especially the regions to the northwest of Saigon and the Mekong Delta suffer from drought in April. The Mekong Delta also suffers from salt intrusion which does much damage to local agriculture.
If you travel to South Vietnam in April, the best thing you can do is to have a beach holiday be it in Vung Tau or on the offshore islands like Con Dao and Phu Quoc.

1/ The First Week of April 2020
The first week of April 2020 found cloudy weather, some rain and pleasant temperatures in most of the North of Vietnam. The temperatures were 17-25oC in the mountains and 20-24oC in the lowlands. The extreme Northwest was warm for a couple of days with the temperatures of 19-36; nice in Son La mostly but hot in Dien Bien Phu and Lai Chau.
The North of the Central had lovely weather with sunshine and pleasant temperatures of 22-26oC. The Central Coast had mostly nice weather with sunshine and pleasant temperatures of 22-31oC. The Central Highlands had strong sun and warm at mid day, 17-36oC. The South of Vietnam had strong sun and hot temperatures, 25-37oC.
Vung Tau had pleasant temperatures, 28-31oC. Both Con Dao Islands and Phu Quoc Island had sun and nice temperatures, 27-28oC and 27-32oC respectively.
At mid week, there was a new spell of Northeasterly Monsoon blowing through northern Vietnam which caused some rain and which made the temperatures in the North pleasant all over. It was mostly overcast in the North throughout the week.

The Central Coast and a part of the Central Highlands (Kon Tum) had some t-storms and rains at the end of the first week. The South of Vietnam remained warm.
2/ The Second Week of April 2020
The second week marked pleasant weather in the North of Vietnam with mostly clouds and some isolated light rains.
The Central Coast had mostly sun, clouds, isolated t-storms and pleasant temperatures.
The Central Highlands and South of Vietnam started having torrential rain which makes the temperatures pleasant after several days with warm temperatures and strong sun. The rain helped much with the ongoing drought. This year the rain has come earlier than usual.
At mid week, there was a torrential rain with hail stones in Son La and a new spell of Northeasterly Monsoon in the North of Vietnam. T-storms with strong gusts of winds destroyed several houses and agricultural crops in Moc Chau.
For the remainder of the week, the North mostly had pleasant weather with weak sunshine and extremely nice temperatures. The Central Coast enjoyed mostly sun and pleasant temperatures. The Central Highlands and South of Vietnam had nice temperatures with much needed rain.
3/ The Third Week of April 2020
In the third week, the weather in the North of Vietnam remained nice mostly with clouds and and lovely temperatures. The Central Coast had sun, clouds and nice temperatures. The Central Highlands and South of Vietnam had sun, t-storms and nice temperatures. The rainy season seemed to have started in the Central Highlands and South of Vietnam which is a bit earlier than usual.
Coming toward the end of the third week of April 2020, a thermal air mass to the west of Vietnam and a thermal air trough with axis in between the 25th and 28th parallel north caused high temperatures (35-38oC) in the extreme Northwest of Vietnam, parts of the Central Highlands of Vietnam and South of Vietnam.
At the end of the third week, there was rain with big hailstones in Ky Son and Tuong Duong Districts of Nghe An (North of the Central Coast of Vietnam).
4/ The Fourth Week of April 2020
The fourth week started with a new spell of Northeasterly Monsoon making temperatures pleasant in the North (17-26oC mostly) and Central Coast (24-34oC mostly). The cold wind was strengthened later to keep the temperatures in the North cool and those in the Central Coast pleasant for the rest of the month. There were t-storms and clouds in most of the North of Vietnam, and in the Central Coast of Vietnam.
Rain with big hailstones was found in many provinces in the Northwest of Vietnam: many districts of Lai Chau, Son La, Dien Bien, Hoa Binh which wreaked lots of damage to local households and their crops. A flash flood in Lai Chau cost human lives.
Parts of the Central Highlands had warm temperatures in the first couple of days of the fourth week then it turned to be pleasant for the rest of the month. And the South of Vietnam remained hot with temperatures reaching 35-37oC.
