October is autumn in Northern Vietnam, is the rainy season in the Central Coast, is about the end of the rainy season in the Central Highlands, and in Southern Vietnam.
The temperatures tend to be pleasant in most of Vietnam in October. Depending on each year that it may rain more or it may be just dry with lovely breezes in Northern Vietnam. And it tends to rain more in the in the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam coming toward the end of the rainy season. The Central Coast of Vietnam will have more long-lasting and heavy rain.
General Weather Patterns in Vietnam in October
All of the North of Vietnam is to have prevalent Southeasterly Wind which brings inland moisture, hence rain and more pleasant temperatures in the whole region. It is possible though it does not often take place that there are typhoons to the North which may cause incessant an torrential rain to the region which may pose serious threats of landslides, rockslides and flashfloods in the mountains.
There may be sometimes Northeasterly Wind in October which brings about short-lived rain followed by beautiful days with mild sun, breezes and extremely pleasant temperatures. The temperatures in Northern Vietnam are 22-32oC in the lowlands in the first half of October and 20-28oC in the second half of the month. The temperatures are 1-3 degrees Celsius in the northern mountains compared to the lowlands.
The Central Coast of Vietnam should have rain mostly. The temperatures tend to be pleasant between 24-32oC. The region may be under impact of a typhoon in October in which case expect floods in the lowland and coastal region and flash floods in the mountains.
The Central Highlands and South of Vietnam still come under influence of the Southwesterly Wind which causes daily rain. It tends to rain more in these two regions in the first half of October, it rains less in the second half of October as the rainy season comes toward the end. It may be sunshine in day time and the rain comes in late afternoon. The temperatures are 21-28oC in the Central Highlands, 24-32oC in Southern Vietnam.
In the case the Central Coast is hit by a typhoon then the Central Highlands may get torrential rain and there may be landslides or flashfloods. During this time the skies may be gloomy in both the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam.

1/ Hiking Tours, Mountain Trekking Tours
October is generally a good time for adventure tours in Northern Vietnam, except for the period the region is under impact of a typhoon which may last for 2-3 days each. It is fall in the North and the weather is mostly favorable : dry, breezy. Those embark on mountain trekking tours are to be awarded with beautiful clouds on high mountain peaks. From the end of October maple trees on high mountains change to yellow or red colors which are just breathtaking !
October is not a great time for hike tours in the Central Highlands given it is high rainy season. Even it is sunny mostly in day time but high rainfalls cause higher water in the rivers and rapids which make them even dangerous.
2/ Adventure Tours
Northern Vietnam is a great place for general adventure tours in October except for the time when it is under impact of a typhoon. Traveling in the North this month you’ll get pleasant temperatures, breezes and mild sunshine.
Though October is not a good time adventure tours in the Central Coast given it is heavy and relentlessly rain a time in this region.
In the Central Highlands and in Southern Vietnam, it is high rainy season but the rain mostly comes at the end of a day. If you do not venture into jungles crossing rivers in the wilderness, then it should be fine. The temperatures are pleasant in these two regions in October.
3/ Birding Trips and Bird Watching Tours
October is the fall migration time that most migratory bird species have been present in national parks and nature reserves in Vietnam, and bird parks in the country are vivid with wildlife.
Birding sites in Vietnam in October :
- Cuc Phuong National Park (Ninh Binh) : resident birds and migratory bird species.
- Van Long Nature Reserve (Ninh Binh): storks and water fowls.
- Xuan Thuy National Park (Nam Dinh) : storks, shore birds, migratory bird species.
- Bach Ma National Park (Thua Thien – Hue) : This is among the region with the top annual rainfalls in Vietnam and it is the rainy season : AdventureGreen do not organize trips be it eco tours or bird tours to Bach Ma National Park in October.
- Da Lat, Bidoup Nui Ba National Park, Deo Nui Sam at Di Linh (Lam Dong, Central Highlands) : Birding at Da Lat and other sites in Lam Dong Province is a great experience in October.
- Cat Tien National Park (Dong Nai, Southern Vietnam) : October is a great time for birdwatching at Cat Tien National Park.
4/ Family Tours
Generally speaking, families should have a good time traveling in Vietnam in October with the exception of the Central Coasts.
5/ Island Holidays
You are to have nice temperatures in Vietnam in October. The problem is that it is rough sea around most islands in Vietnam due to the Northeasterly Wind. Due to rough sea that boat trips and sea exploration trips like snorkeling and scuba diving... are not operated. If you except these facts, then you can have good time on the islands : Co To Island and Quan Lan Island (Quang Ninh Province), Cat Ba Island (Hai Phong), Con Dao Islands (Ba Ria-Vung Tau), Phu Quoc Island (Kien Giang).
October is not a recommended time to travel to islands in the Central Coast (Cu Lao Cham in Hoi An or Ly Son Island in Quang Ngai, Phu Quy Island in Binh Thuan) due to strong winds, rough sea and rainy weather mostly.
6/ Beach Vacations
If you travel to Southern Vietnam then you may try Vung Tau Beach, Long Hai Beach and Ho Tram Beach (all in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province). You can have pleasant temperatures in daytime mostly, some rain at the end of a day.
In Northern Vietnam, Sam Son Beach or the beaches on islands in Northern Vietnam have rough sea mostly. And those beaches in the Central Coast have rainy weather mostly.

First week of October, 2023
October 2023 started off with the provinces of Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh and part of Quang Tri had been suffering from floods caused by the tropical depression at the end of September.
The North of Vietnam had got torrential rain for 3 days at the end of September and enjoyed sunshine, breezes, pleasant temperatures.
The Central Highlands and South of Vietnam had sunshine in most of the day and heavy rain at the end of each day. Cities were partially and temporarily flooded.
Regional weather at the beginning of the first week of October 2023 was as follows :

Second week of October, 2023
In the second week of October 2023 there was Typhoon Koinu (Typhoon No. 04 in Vietnam in 2023) which was barreling towards the Gulf of Tonkin and Northern Vietnam had the first major spell of cool Northeasterly Wind which caused some rain inthe lowland of Northern Vietnam and heavy rain in the mountains in the far-north of Vietnam. Heavy rain caused floods in Yen Bai City and Van Yen District of Yen Bai Province.
The Central Coast had entered the rainy season and heavy and long lasting rain is the norm. The Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam is in high rainy season with heavy rain at the end of a day only and it may be sunny in daytime.

Several places in the Central Coast of Vietnam suffered from heavy and relentless rain in the Central Coast which caused floods in several places in the provinces : Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien-Hue, Da Nang. Several schools were closed due to heavy rain and floods. Rock slides were reported on the Hai Van Pass between Da Nang and Hue.

In the third week of October 2023, torrential rain continued in the Central Coast of Vietnam ; heavy rain continued in the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam at the end of each day. The North underwent autunmal weather with bright sunshine and pleasant temperatures.
Several places in the Central Coast from Ha Tinh to Quang Nam are still flooded. Schools in Da Nang remained shut due to heavy rain and the floods.
On 17-October, a tropical depression formed 150km to the southwest of the Hoang Sa Islands (Paracel Islands) packing sustained winds of 39-49kph. The projected path in 12 hours was northwest overing 10kph.

There was a flash flood sweeping through a tourist zone in Da Lat (Lam Dong Province).

28-October-2023 there was a weak spell of the cool Northeasterly Wind in Northern Vietnam which caused brief rain and pleasant temperatures to the region. The cool wind caused heavy rain in the Central Coast of Vietnam for a few days after.
29-October-2023 there was a new spell of cool North Easterly Wind which travels inland from the sea and which caused heavy rain in Northern Vietnam. The wind caused torrential rain in the central Coast of Vietnam.
30-October-2023 there was a strengthening spell of cool Northeasterly Wind, which traveled mostly inland, which caused dry and sunny weather in Northern Vietnam. The Central Coast (from Ha Tinh to Phu Yen Provinces) had incessant rain which caused floods in Ha Tinh Province.
30-October-2023 : Huong Khe and Vu Quang Districts of Ha Tinh Province were flooded. This was the second time places in Ha Tinh were flooded in 2023.
