Vietnam Weather in September 2024

September is autumn in northern Vietnam, is about to be the beginning of the rainy season with pleasant temperatures in the Central Coast, is the high rainy season with pleasant temperatures in the Central Highlands, the high rainy season with pleasant temperatures in Southern Vietnam.

Monsoons and General Weather Patterns in Vietnam in September

1/ The General weather patterns in Vietnam in September

In September, northern Vietnam may have some warm days but mostly breezy, pleasant temperatures and the weather patterns tend to turn nicer coming toward the end of the month. There may be one or two tropical depressions and/or typhoons in September though and in which case it is likely to cause torrential rain in the region for a couple of days.

In the far northern mountains, in case of typhoons, it is flash floods and land or rock slides that we have to exercise extra caution if we plan to travel there.

In the Central Coast of Vietnam, it may be dry and warm at the beginning, but more rain and pleasant temperatures are expected coming further into the month. While it is not normal for the Central Region, except for the North of the Central Coast, to have tropical depressions or typhoons in September, it may happen and in which cause torrential rain with flood is the result.

It is normal that September is the time that a Tropical Convergence Zone has the axis over the Central Coast of Vietnam which brings about torrential rain and often floods in this region and part of the Central Highlands.

The Central Highlands and South of Vietnam are to have enter a period with heavy and long lasting rain. The temperatures range from pleasant to chilly, cold in the Central Highlands. Expect landslides with possible flash floods in the mountains.

In lowland of southern Vietnam such as Binh Duong, Dong Nai and in Ho Chi Minh City, be extra careful to travel in the rain as strong winds felling big timber trees and flooded streets with open sewers pose deadly dangers. Accidents from these threats have happened and tend to be more frequent nowadays.

2/ Monsoons in Vietnam in September

The prevalent winds which affect different places in Vietnam in September :

- The Southeasterly Wind in most of northern Vietnam : humid and pleasant temperatures, possibly showers.

- In September, the Southwesterly Wind which is from the Equartor which has impacts on the Central Highlands (Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Lam Dong) and Southern Vietnam (Binh Phuoc, Dong Nai, Saigon Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Tay Ninh...), and in the Mekong Delta.

The Southwesterly Wind from the Equator causes daily rain and pleasant temperatures in the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam. This monsoon is especially active in September and October, hence heavier and more long lasting in these two regions.

It is not normal that Vietnam has the Northeasterly Wind in September but it has happened and if it is the case, then northern Vietnam will have beautiful weather with showers in the first couple of days after the wind arrives and the Central Coast of Vietnam will have heavier rain.

Adventure Travel, Nature Tours, Bird Watching Tours, Photo Tours in Vietnam in September

1/ Hiking Tours, Mountain Trekking Tours

September is not a good time for hiking tours or mountain trekking trips in northern Vietnam or in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. The temperatures may be pleasant but the often heavy rain could cause a lot of troubles from slippery and muddy paths, strong running rapids and rivers to flashfloods, landslides and rockslides. In case of strong winds or typhoons, falling trees and branches pose deadly dangers.

2/ Adventure Tours

The lowland of Northern Vietnam including Hanoi, Halong Bay and Ninh Binh could be a good place for general adventure tours as the temperatures are more likely to be tolerable and the rain, if any, should not last that long. It is more likely to have sunshine or cloudy weather in most of the month. There may be a typhoon/tropical depression or two in northern Vietnam in September which may disrupt travel in the region for a few days each time.

Be careful if you venture into the mountainous regions with history of rockslides or landslides if the rain is heavy (which is often the case).

In the Central Coast of Vietnam it is more likely to be pleasant temperatures with long-lasting rain. Heavy rain in the mountainous regions pose threats of landslides and rockslides. If you plan a general adventure tours by car in the coastal regions, then you should have a good time in the first half of the month; in the second half, it may start raining more.

In the Central Highlands, more rain and more heavy rain pose serious threats of landslides and flash floods.

Southern Vietnam is to experience pleasant most of the month. There is daily heavy rain which makes the air refreshing. But exercise extreme caution traveling in the rain as streets in cities are temporarily flooded always and sewers with uncovered openings pose serious dangers. Accidents and fatal accidents resulted from people swept into sewers with strong running water have happened ; even cars have been reported to be swept into open sewers. The places with more dangers are in Binh Duong, Dong Nai and Binh Phuoc Provinces.

3/ Birding Trips and Bird Watching Tours

September could be a good time or not so good a time for bird-watching tours in Vietnam. Fall migration should have started from the first week of September, but we do have to take into account the weather patterns of a spot where we go birding.

In northern Vietnam it is often a good time for birding tours given the presence of more species, more active and gregarious birds and pleasant temperatures mostly. Be aware that there may be typhoons in the region in September, and each may disrupt your travel for 2 days to 7 days.

In the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam, it is more frequent and heavier rain in September which may disrupt your birding. There should not be much difficulty in southern Vietnam, but it may be a problem in the Central Highlands where heavy and long-lasting rain cause quite some difficulty.

Birding sites in Vietnam in September :

- Cuc Phuong National Park (Ninh Binh) : : resident birds mostly.

- Van Long Nature Reserve  (Ninh Binh): resident storks and waterfowls.

- Bach Ma National Park (Thua Thien – Hue) : This is among the region with the top annual rainfalls in Vietnam. It is not recommended to visit the Bach Ma National Park when it rains or when it is wet and foggy. September is not the time to travel here anyway.

- Da Lat, Bidoup Nui Ba National Park, Deo Nui Sam at Di Linh (Lam Dong, Central Highlands) : Birding at Da Lat and other sites in Lam Dong Province is still possible in September, but this is not the best time anyway.

- Cat Tien National Park (Dong Nai, Southern Vietnam) : September is not the best time for birdwatching at Cat Tien National Park but you should enjoy your birding here given the pleasant temperatures and presence of many bird species. It is only that there is heavy and long-lasting rain sometimes and the rising water of the Dong Nai River may cause troubles.

4/ Family Tours

Generally speaking, families should have a good time traveling in Vietnam in September, provided you do not travel to the northern mountains, mountains in the Central Coast, or to the Central Highlands. If you plan for a family tour in the lowland of northern Vietnam, in the Central Coast of Vietnam and in southern Vietnam, you should enjoy your trip.

5/ Island Holidays

September is not really a recommended time to make trips to the islands in Vietnam. The reason is the sea is often rough, and in case of typhoons or tropical depressions, travel between the inland and the islands are disrupted for a few days.

6/ Beach Vacations

In Northern Vietnam, Sam Son Beach or the beaches on islands in Northern Vietnam have pleasant temperatures ; rough sea is expected. The beaches are not crowded this month.

And those beaches in the South of the Central Coast have sunny alternated with cloudy weather mostly with pleasant or sometimes warm temperatures : Quy Nhon, Tuy Hoa, Ninh Chu, Mui Ne, Phan Thiet.

If you travel to Southern Vietnam then you September try Vung Tau Beach, Long Hai Beach and Ho Tram Beach (all in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province). You can have pleasant temperatures but expect more cloudy days or frequent rain.

Because September is not really a busy time for the beaches in Vietnam, you won’t have big problems with the crowds then.

At the end of the first week and beginning of the second week of 2024, there was Typhoon Yagi, Storm No.3 in Vietnam in 2024 which was  a super storm with sustained winds of over 200 kph. The wind made landfall around the area of Halong City in Quang Ninh Province barreling inland for several hours without weakening much.
The area of the typhoon with destructive wind covered several hundred kilometers.

The typhoon maintained the level of destructive winds from the time it made landfall (around 13:00 hours of 7-September-2024) to around 23:00 hours of the same day when it barreled through Hanoi with much destruction.

The typhoon only weakened after passing through Hanoi for neighboring provinces (Hoa Binh, Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc) to be a tropical depression with sustained winds of 39 kph. The damage was almost unprecedented : tens of thousands of big trees felled down; houses destroyed, power poles felled down.... Floods were reported due to heavy rain caused by the typhoon in Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Lang Son, Cao Bang, Yen Bai, Thai Nguyen, Lao Cai...

Right after Typhoon Yagi in northern Vietnam, southern Vietnam and the Central Highlands had more rain due to the Tropical Convergence Zone moving southward from northern Vietnam to the Central Region of Vietnam and due to more active Southwesterly Monsoon. Exercise extra cautions when navigating flooded streets in the South and in the Central Highlands.

Due to heavy rain caused by Typhoon No. 4 (Soulik), several places in Quang Binh Province was flooded.

4/ Fourth week and last days of September, 2024

In the last week and last days of September 2024, northern Vietnam got the first spell of the cool Northeasterly Wind (Winter Monsoon) for the coming winter season of 2024-2025. The wind caused rain all over the North.

The Central Coast of Vietnam had entered the rainy season. The region was hit by Typhoon No. 4 (Soulik) which caused heavy rain. Besides, the Tropical Convergence Zone had an axis cross the Central Region which caused more long-lasting and heavier rain. Several places in Nghe An, Ha Tinh and Quang Binh were flooded.

Due to the presence of the Tropical Convergence Zone in the Central Region, the Southwesterly Wid became more active, hence more rain and torrential rain in the Central Highlands and southern Vietnam. All mountainous roads from the Central Highlands to southern Vietnam and the Central Coast of Vietnam are vulnerable to landslides, rockslides and mud slides.

The regional weather was as follows:
- Northeast  (Lang Son, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Ha Giang...):  clouds, rain, 20-31/32oC;
- Northwest : sun, clouds, rain, 21-32oC in Hoa Binh, Yen Bai, 24-34oC in Lao Cai; clouds, rain, 20-31/32oC in Son La, Dien Bien, Lai Chau;
- Lowlands in Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Ninh Binh...):  clouds, rain, 24-33/32oC ;
- North of the Central Coast (Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh): clouds, rain, 22/24-31oC ;

- Mid Central Coast to the north of Hai Van (Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien-Hue) : rain, 24-32oC in Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Hue ;
- Mid Central Coast to the south of Hai Van (Da Nang to Quang Ngai) : clouds, rain, 24-31/33oC ;
- South Central Coast  (Quy Nhon, Tuy Hoa – Nha Trang): clouds,  rain,25-32oC ;
- South Central Coast ( Phan Rang-Thap Cham to Phan Thiet): clouds, rain, 25-33/32oC;
