Quang Tri Province of Vietnam is located in the Central Region of the country, 600km south of Hanoi and 75km north of Hue. Quang Tri was where the former demarcation line between North and South Vietnam and the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) were located. The province was among the most heavily bombed lands in Vietnam during the war.

1/ Vinh Moc Tunnel

Vinh Moc Tunnel is where you learn about the villagers’ life and the military operations by both sides during the war. There were several people who were born in the tunnels of Vinh Moc during the war.

2/ Hien Luong Bridge

The bridges which spans the Ben Hai River which was the natural demarcation line along the 17th parallel which separated the North and South of Vietnam during the war.

3/ Route 9

Route 9 runs south of the 17th parallel from Cua Viet to the Laotian border. Route 9 was where the US had lots of efforts to stop the infiltration of the People’s Army of Vietnam (North Vietnam) into the South. Fierce battles took place along this route with the most brutal ones around Khe Sanh Combat Base in 1968.

4/ McNamara Line

This was an electronic barrier running 100km south of the Ben Hai River and North of Route 9 from the East Sea of Vietnam to the Laotian border. Around McNamara Line, the US employed the most advanced detection technologies. The construction cost was estimated 1.5 billion US Dollars and the annual operational cost was about USD740.

5/ Rockpile

This is a sudden outcropping on the northern side of Route 9 which provides commanding views of the whole vast area. The Rockpile is 20km east of the Dak Rong Bridge and 30km west of Dong Ha City.

6/ The Dak Rong Bridge

The bridge was the beginning of the western leg of Ho Chi Minh Trail, an important supply route from North to South Vietnam during the war.

7/ Khe Sanh Combat Base, Lang Vay, Ta Con Airfield

The whole complex was the linchpin of the defense system the US built in efforts to block infiltration by PAVN into South Vietnam during the war. Visiting Khe Sanh, you’ll learn a lot about the war and the famed Battle of Khe Sanh in 1968.

8/ Con Tien, Doc Mieu

Doc Mieu and Con Tien were the eastern and western ends of McNamara Line in 1967, a strip of 500m-wide was bulldozed from one point to the other back then. These two sites were bases of the US Marine Corps during the war. Learn about the US Marine Corps Bases and the series of battles which took place around the area back in time.

9/ Quang Tri Ancient Citadel

This was the site of a fierce battle in 1972 which took place for 81 days and which was among the most brutal battles during the whole Vietnam War (or American War).

10/ The sea of Cua Tung and Cua Viet

The sea offers refreshing air, lovely photographs and deserted beaches. There were amazing military and commando operations by both sides during the war at these two river mouths too.

How to get to and how to get around Quang Tri

There are several daily bus commuters between Hue – Quang Tri – Hanoi. Alternatively you can choose to go by trains with several trains commuting Hanoi and Saigon which stops at Dong Ha City.
