2/Hoa Binh Reservoir
A boat trip for 2 hours on the Hoa Binh Reservoir brings you to different Muong and Dao Villages. After the boat trip, there is a chance to sample local cuisine at a restaurant in Hoa Binh City.
There are several islands on the Hoa Binh Reservoir of which Thung Nai is the most popular to the Vietnamese young tourists. The island may be too crowded at weekend.

3/Lung Van
The Valley of Clouds is a secluded world of rice fields at clouds which is home to the Muong Bi ethnic people. The area is located on the altitude of 900m above sea level and is considered the summit of the Muong’s homeland. The climate is cool throughout the year here. This valley is a part of the Ngoc Son – Ngo Luong Nature Reserve, just by the Pu Luong Nature Reserve.

4/Thung Khe Pass
The high pass between Tan Lac District and Mai Chau offers amazing mountains amid valleys littered with Muong Villages. The pass is often covered in mist and it is cool when you travel on the top.

5/Mai Chau Valley
The valley is home to the White Thai ethnic group who inhabit in houses on stilts. A 2-day trip to Mai Chau from Hanoi offers a good glimpse into their life and culture. Accommodations are either at a Thai homestay or at an ecolodge with great natural settings.

6/Pa Co Hang Kia
These villages offers 2-hour hike into a hidden valley inhabiting by the Hmong People. From Hang Kia, there’s a scenic and challenging trek to Cun Pheo and Sam Khoe which require at least a night at Sam Khoe. In October and November the Hang Kia Valley is full of gorgeous spinach flowers; in January-March, it is decorated with plum and peach flowers. The hard trek goes through forest and the path mostly goes down into valleys. The best time for this trek is from November through April.

7/Go Lao Waterfall
The waterfall is in Mai Chau District amid a pristine forest. The Go Lao Waterfall can be visited on a off-the-beaten track bicycle tour from Mai Chau. The tour also brings you to the amazing Ba Khan Lake.

How to get to Hoa Binh and how to travel around Hoa Binh
1/From Hanoi to Hoa Binh
Hoa Binh is less than 2 hours’ drive from Hanoi via Route 6. There is a newly built expressway which makes the road journey by car to just a little over 1 hour’s drive. The road is flat and you start seeing pristine mountains after Xuan Mai Town. Route 6 marked fierce battles between the Vietnamese troops and the French ones during the Battle of Hoa Binh.

Along Route 6 there are a few tourist attractions for you to visit: Van Phuc Silk Village at Ha Dong, Ho Chi Minh Trail Museum at Ha Dong, Tram Pagoda at Truc Son (near Ha Dong), the lovely mountains from Luong Son to Ky Son.
2/From Phu Tho to Hoa Binh
The road to Hoa Binh from Phu Tho goes along the Da River (Black River) from north to south. The landscape by the riverside is lovely. This route is rarely taken by tourists and you’ll have the amazing landscape for yourself most of the time. There are sites of the Battle of Hoa Binh, and wonderful views of the Ba Vi Mountain for you to adore on this journey.

3/From Son La to Hoa Binh
Basically you’ll follow Route 6 all the way from Son La City via Moc Chau Plateau passing through Mai Chau to Hoa Binh City. The landscapes are especially beautiful at Moc Chau and Mai Chau where the road goes down mostly and there are several stops for sightseeing on this trip: Moc Chau flower fields, Thai ethnic villages at the Mai Chau Valley, stunning mountain views at the Thung Khe Pass…

4/From Thanh Hoa to Hoa Binh
There are 2 routes from Thanh Hoa to Hoa Binh. One is from the Pu Luong Nature Reserve through Mai Chau to Hoa Binh. This route is very scenic at Mai Chau and the Thung Khe Pass.
The other route is via Ho Chi Minh Trail to Tan Lac, Cao Phong and Hoa Binh. This route is rarely taken by tourists. The mountains along the road are quite scenic.

5/From Ninh Binh to Hoa Binh
This route via a part of the Ho Chi Minh Trail near the Cuc Phuong National Park to Tan Lac, Cao Phong, then Hoa Binh. The road is small and very quiet.

6/From Ha Nam to Hoa Binh
This way is done via Route 21 which mark few battles of the Battle of Hoa Binh during the First Indochina War. The road is quiet and the landscape includes idyllic villages.
