August is in between summer and autumn in Northern Vietnam, is between the dry season with hot temperatures and the rainy season with pleasant temperatures in the Central Coast, is the rainy season with pleasant temperatures in the Central Highlands, the rainy season with pleasant temperatures in Southern Vietnam.
Monsoons and General Weather Patterns in Vietnam in August
1/ The General weather patterns in Vietnam in August
In August, northern Vietnam may have some warm days but mostly breezy, pleasant temperatures and the weather patterns tend to turn nicer coming toward the end of the month. There may be one or two tropical depressions and/or typhoons in August though and in which case it is likely to cause torrential rain in the region for a couple of days. In the far northern mountains, in case of typhoons, it is flash floods and land or rock slides that we have to exercise extra caution if we plan to travel there.
Depending on a specific year that in the Central Coast of Vietnam, there may be rain or just dry and hot temperatures. If it rains in August, it is more likely to be short lived rain and the temperatures turn pleasant. The Central Coast is less likely but still possibly to get typhoons in August. In case of tropical depressions or typhoons, it is often torrential rain.
The Central Highlands and South of Vietnam are to have daily short-lived rain on a more frequent level. The temperatures are pleasant in these two regions. But heavy rain may pose difficulties or dangers given that streets in cities may be temporarily flooded and landslides may take place in the Central Higlands. The Central Highlands have be impacted by typhoons and/or tropical depressions in August and it rains heavily a couple of days or more each time.
2/ Monsoons in Vietnam in August
The prevalent winds which affect different places in Vietnam in August :
- The Southeasterly Wind in most of northern Vietnam : humid and pleasant temperatures, possibly showers sometimes.
- The Westerly Wind (foehn wind) in most of the Central Coast of Vietnam from Thanh Hoa to Phu Yen: dry air and hot temperatures.
- In August, the Southwesterly Wind which is from the Equartor which has impacts on the Central Highlands (Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Lam Dong) and Southern Vietnam (Binh Phuoc, Dong Nai, Saigon Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Tay Ninh...), and in the Mekong Delta.
The Southwesterly Wind from the Equator causes daily short-lived rain and pleasant temperatures in the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam.
Adventure Travel, Nature Tours, Bird Watching Tours, Photo Tours in Vietnam in August
1/ Hiking Tours, Mountain Trekking Tours
August is not a good time for hiking tours or mountain trekking trips. The temperatures could be too hot or it could rain anytime anywhere in Vietnam in August. In the far north of Vietnam, the temperatures may be pleasant sometimes but the rain could come anytime which makes hiking trails just slippery and muddy. The Central Highlands are similar with daily rain. Be extra careful if you travel through mountainous regions with steep and unforested slopes.
2/ Adventure Tours
The lowland of Northern Vietnam including Hanoi, Halong Bay and Ninh Binh could be a good place for general adventure tours as the temperatures are more likely to be tolerable and the rain, if any, should not last that long. It is more likely to have sunshine in most of the month. There may be a typhoon/tropical depression or two in northern Vietnam in August which may disrupt travel in the region for a couple of days each time.
Be careful if you venture into the mountainous regions with history of rockslides or landslides if the rain is heavy. On some days it may be hot with strong sun, then be prepared to drink enough water and to avoid traveling at mid day in strong sunshine.
In the Central Coast of Vietnam it is more likely to be strong sun with high temperatures exceeding 36-37oC most of the time. It may rain in the mountainous regions posing threats of landslides and rockslides. If you plan a general adventure tours by car in the coastal regions, then you should have a good time.
In the Central Highlands, you get daily shortlived rain and pleasant temperatures. Most of the time you should get nice adventure holidays in this region in August. However, in some years it rains more than normal posing serious threats of landslides and flash floods.
Southern Vietnam is to experience pleasant or tolerable temperatures most of the month. There is daily short-lived rain which makes the air refreshing. But exercise extreme caution traveling in the rain as streets in cities are temporarily flooded always and sewers with uncovered openings pose serious dangers. Accidents and fatal accidents resulted from people swept into sewers with strong running water have happened ; even cars have been reported to be swept into open sewers.
3/ Birding Trips and Bird Watching Tours
August is not really a good time and not that a bad time for birding tours in Vietnam. In northern Vietnam it is not the nesting and mating season but the birds are still quite shy, given that it is often hot in the first half of the month.
In the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam, you can still observe several bird species but more species are to be spotted during the dry season. Sudden rain in the North and in the Central Coast, daily rain in the Central Highlands and in southern Vietnam August also affect your birding trips slightly.
Birding sites in Vietnam in August :
- Cuc Phuong National Park (Ninh Binh) : : resident birds mostly.
- Van Long Nature Reserve (Ninh Binh): resident storks and waterfowls.
- Bach Ma National Park (Thua Thien – Hue) : This is among the region with the top annual rainfalls in Vietnam. It is not recommended to visit the Bach Ma National Park when it rains or when it is wet and foggy.
- Da Lat, Bidoup Nui Ba National Park, Deo Nui Sam at Di Linh (Lam Dong, Central Highlands) : Birding at Da Lat and other sites in Lam Dong Province is still possible in August, but this is not the best time anyway.
- Cat Tien National Park (Dong Nai, Southern Vietnam) : August is not the best time for birdwatching at Cat Tien National Park but you will still be able to observe several bird species as well as primates.
4/ Family Tours
Generally speaking, families should have a good time traveling in Vietnam in August, provided you do not travel to the northern mountains or to the Central Highlands. Your family August like to take a family adventure in the lowland of the North, or a family beach vacation in the Central Coast or Southern Vietnam... , then you are to have a wonderful time.
5/ Island Holidays
August is not really an ideal time to travel to islands in Vietnam if you want lovely sunshine. If you want lovely temperatures and windy time, then you will enjoy your holidays on the islands in Vietnam.
It is worth noting that there may be tropical depression or typhoons in northern Vietnam in August which may distrupt trips between the shore and the islands.
For the best island vacations, you August want to consider these: Co To Island and Quan Lan Island (Quang Ninh Province), Cat Ba Island (Hai Phong), Ly Son Island (Quang Ngai), Phu Quy Island (Binh Thuan), Con Dao Islands (Ba Ria-Vung Tau), Phu Quoc Island (Kien Giang).
6/ Beach Vacations
In Northern Vietnam, Sam Son Beach or the beaches on islands in Northern Vietnam have pleasant temperatures ; rough sea is expected.
And those beaches in the South of the Central Coast have sunny alternated with cloudy weather mostly with pleasant or sometimes warm temperatures : Quy Nhon, Tuy Hoa, Ninh Chu, Mui Ne, Phan Thiet.
If you travel to Southern Vietnam then you August try Vung Tau Beach, Long Hai Beach and Ho Tram Beach (all in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province). You can have pleasant temperatures mostly with beautifully bright sunshine.
Because August is not really a busy time for the beaches in Vietnam, you won’t have big problems with the crowds then.
