August is the transitional time between summer and autumn in the North of Vietnam, between the hot and dry season and the rainy season in the Central Coast of Vietnam. There could by tropical depressions or typhoons hitting the North of the Central Coast or the North of Vietnam in August. August is the rainy season in the Central Highlands and South of Vietnam.
August may not be a great time for adventure tours in the far north of Vietnam due to more heavy rain which may cause landslides and flash floods.
The winds which affect Vietnam in August include:
- The Southeasterly Wind in the North of Vietnam which causes rain and nice temperatures.
- Westerly/Southwesterly Wind in much of the Central Coast of Vietnam which is also known as the foehn wind that causes heat strikes in this region;
- Southwesterly Wind in the Central Highlands and the South of Vietnam which is moist and pleasant and which causes daily short-lived rain and nice temperatures;
In August the Northeast of Vietnam has occasional rain, some sunshine and often pleasant temperatures (24-30oC). The Northwest of Vietnam often has nice temperatures, heavy occasional rain (22-33oC). The lowlands of northern Vietnam have pleasant temperatures and t-storms (26-34oC).
Depending on each year, the Central Coast may have more rain or more sunshine. The temperatures can vary from 25-35oC.
The Central Highlands often have daily rain and nice temperatures (21-29oC).
The South of Vietnam has daily rain and nice temperatures (25-31oC).
Both the Con Dao Islands and Phu Quoc Island have nice weather with sun, clouds, daily short-lived rain, pleasant temperatures (26-30oC).
Below is our review of the weather in Vietnam in August 2020.
1/ August 2020 started with Typhoon No. 2 (internationally coded as Sinlaku) hitting the coast from Thai Binh to Nghe An. Torrential rain was found in the North and North of the Central Coast of Vietnam. There were several places temporarily flooded or isolated as a result of incessant rain: Quan Son (Thanh Hoa); Viet Tri City and Tan Son (Phu Tho); Dien Bien Phu City; Yen Bai City. There was a landslide at Phin Ngan (Bat Xat, Lao Cai) causing human lives.
The temperatures were pleasant in all of the country. The Central Highlands and South of Vietnam also had heavy rain and nice temperatures in the first week of August 2020.
2/ The second week of August 2020 started with clouds and t-storms, nice temperatures all over Vietnam. Heavy rain was found in most of the country. Coming toward to middle of the week, the temperatures got higher in the Red River Delta and hot in the Central Coast. The Southwesterly Wind was strong which caused heavy rain in the Central Highlands and South of Vietnam.
There was a tropical depression/typhoon in the mid of the second week which headed to Fujian (China). The influence was heavy rain in the far northern mountains and strong winds on the islands in the the Central and South of Vietnam.
3/ The third week started with clouds, t-storms and pleasant temperatures in most of Vietnam. Heavy rain was found in the North, in the Central Highlands and South of Vietnam.
A flash flood swept away houses in Nam Po (Dien Bien Province).
There was a tropical depression which turned into Typhoon No 4 in Vietnam in 2020 (Higos). But the tropical storm made landfall in Guangdong (China).
Coming toward the end of the third week, there was heavy rain in the North of Vietnam. Flash floods and landslides in the mountain destroyed houses, agricultural crops, houses and killed some people. Several cities in the lowlands were temporarily flooded.
Pleasant temperatures and t-storms were found in the Central Coast, in the Central Highlands and in the South of Vietnam.
4/ In first couple of days of the fourth week, most of Vietnam enjoyed pleasant weather with t-storms, some sun, clouds. There was less rain in the Central Highlands and South of Vietnam.
From mid of the week till the end of the month, there was a brief heat strike in the Central Coast and then the North of Vietnam with temperatures reaching 35-37oC. The South of Vietnam had hot temperatures for a couple of days before the month ended, too.
