Bac Kan Province is located the north-eastern region of Vietnam, the eponymous provincial capital is 170km from Ha Noi via National Road No. 3. The draw-card of tourism in Bac Kan is Ba Be National Park, 100km from Bac Kan Town.

1/ Ba Be National Park
Ba Be National Park includes a system of rivers, lakes, caves and primeval forests. The park is inhabited by different ethnic groups such as Tay, Dzao, Hmong, Nung, Kinh. At Ba Be, you can have a relaxing cruise on the lake which is listed in UNESCO World Ramsar Site, or you can have specialist tour researching the fauna and flora, or you can take part in 2-3 night adventure tours trekking amid the breathtaking landscapes.
In the Ba Be National Park you can have a boat trip on the Ba Be Lake, on the Nang River, visiting the Dau Dang Waterfall, Puong Cave, Pac Ngoi Village...

2/ Phu Thong Former French Post
This was a French outpost to monitor Viet Minh’s movements in the liberated zone. The a series of battles of Phu Thong put an end to the outpost. Visiting the site you can learn some important period in the Vietnamese history.
3/ Bac Kan City
The eponymous provincial capital city is small and most travelers only pass through on their way to Ba Be National Park or Cao Bang. But Bac Kan City was in the heart of Viet Minh’s Resistance War against the French. A series of extremely important battles took place right in Bac Kan City in 1947 and important strategies were implemented by General Giap to keep the resistance to live on. Else, the history of Vietnam would have been very different.
4/ Na Khoang Waterfall
This is right at the Windy Pass on the t-junction leading to Ba Be from Na Phac. This is a great place for young couple to have an escape amid wilderness and wild nature.
5/ Kim Hy Nature Reserve
The nature reserves stretches in the districts of Na Ri and Bach Thong with a system of rivers, forested limestone mountains with total area of nearly 23,000 hectares.

How to get there
Bac Kan can be visited from Thai Nguyen, Lang Son, Cao Bang and Tuyen Quang. The route to Bac Kan from Thai Nguyen is used by most travelers who start the journey from Hanoi.
1/ Thai Nguyen – Bac Kan City
There are 3 roads between Thai Nguyen and Bac Kan: 2 roads linking Thai Nguyen City and Bac Kan City and 1 road linking Thai Nguyen City and Ba Be National Park. The roads are quite flat, in good conditions and there are scenic mountains all the way.
The 2 roads linking Thai Nguyen City and Bac Kan City run in parallel, one is just newly made to avoid most residential areas and cut short the journey. The traffic on the new route is less busy than the other route which is used mostly by locals.

2/ Thai Nguyen – Ba Be National Park
The road linking Thai Nguyen City and Ba Be National Park is more of a country back road with spectacular scenery. The traffic is quiet and there are quite a few spots on the way that are worth a stop for photography. This route is used a lot by AdventureGreen on our adventure tours, motorbike tours and bike tours to Ba Be National Park.

3/Cao Bang – Bac Kan
There are 2 routes from Cao Bang to Bac Kan:
- Road 3 from Cao Bang City to Bac Kan City
This road is very hilly and scenic and in very good conditions. The journey from Cao Bang to Na Phac offers plenty of photograph opportunities of the mountains and villages. There is a chance for hiking amid wild nature at the Windy Pass near Na Phac. It is quite flat from Na Phac to Bac Kan City and there are lovely rice fields with mountains in the backdrop.
- The other road from Cao Bang to Bac Kan is actually from Tinh Tuc to Ba Be National Park.
This is actually a deserted road and the road conditions are not so good. But the wild and sublime landscape on this route is unbelievably captivating. Also, there is a chance for you to visit Phia Den, a deserted hill station amid wilderness and with cool climate all year round. This route is ideal for a mountain bike adventure.

4/ Tuyen Quang – Bac Kan
From Tuyen Quang to Bac Kan, you’ll have to take the painful Route 279 from Na Hang (Tuyen Quang) to Ba Be National Park (Bac Kan) which is mostly in bad conditions and worse during the rainy season. But the reward is spectacular mountainous landscape as you’ll be on a high mountain road looking down at the surrounding wild nature. Be prepared with enough petrol as you may be desperately in need of as you climb the endless mountain pass. Exercise caution as accidents are reported often.
