Vietnam Weather in October 2024

October is autumn in northern Vietnam, is the beginning of the rainy season with pleasant temperatures in the Central Coast, is the high rainy season with pleasant temperatures in the Central Highlands, the high rainy season with pleasant temperatures in Southern Vietnam.

Monsoons and General Weather Patterns in Vietnam in October

1/ The General weather patterns in Vietnam in October

In October, northern Vietnam has mostly breezy, pleasant temperatures with mild sunshine or cloudy weather. There may be one or two tropical depressions and/or typhoons in October which may have impact in the North or in the Central Region of Vietnam.

In the far northern mountains, in case of typhoons, it is flash floods and land or rock slides that we have to exercise extra caution if we plan to travel there.

In the Central Coast of Vietnam, the rainy season should have started and frequent rain at first, then the rain lasts longer and longer day by day. The rainfalls tend to be more and more in the region, too. The western mountains tend to have flash floods and the low land along the coast tend to have places flooded temporarily.

It is normal that October is the time that a Tropical Convergence Zone has the axis over the Central Region of Vietnam which brings about torrential rain and often floods in this region and part of the Central Highlands.

The Central Region is more likely to get hit by a typhoon in comparision to northern Vietnam in October and this is especially true when there are more spells of the cool Northeasterly Wind in the North. In case of typhoons, the whole region be it lowland, along the coast or in the mountains are vulnerable to floods, landslides...

The Central Region also gets more rain each time there is a spell of the Northeasterly Wind or when the wind is active in the North or in this region.

The Central Highlands and South of Vietnam are to have enter a period with heavy and long lasting rain. The temperatures range from pleasant to chilly, cold in the Central Highlands. Expect landslides with possible flash floods in the mountains.

In lowland of southern Vietnam such as Binh Duong, Dong Nai and in Ho Chi Minh City, be extra careful to travel in the rain as strong winds felling big timber trees and flooded streets with open sewers pose deadly dangers. Accidents from these threats have happened and tend to be more frequent nowadays. Falling trees and tree branches also pose deadly dangers.

2/ Monsoons in Vietnam in October

The prevalent winds which affect different places in Vietnam in October :

- The Southeasterly Wind in most of northern Vietnam : humid and pleasant temperatures, possibly showers.

- In October, the Southwesterly Wind, which is from the Equartor and which is more active, causes heavy and long-lasting rain the Central Highlands (Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Lam Dong) and Southern Vietnam (Binh Phuoc, Dong Nai, Saigon Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Tay Ninh...), and in the Mekong Delta. It is normal the wind becomes more active when the Tropical Convergence Zone has the axis across the Central Region of Vietnam.

The Southwesterly Wind from the Equator causes daily rain and pleasant temperatures in the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam. This monsoon is especially active in October and October, hence heavier and more long lasting in these two regions.

Adventure Travel, Nature Tours, Bird Watching Tours, Photo Tours in Vietnam in October

1/ Hiking Tours, Mountain Trekking Tours

October is a good time for hiking tours or mountain trekking trips in northern Vietnam, but not a good time for trekking adventures in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. Northern Vietnam often enjoys autumnal weather with pleasant temperatures and very dry air (relative humidity of 40-45%). High mountains in the North often offers spectacular clouds and fog which make your photos more of unreal scenes.

Due to more rainfalls in the Central Highlands, it is not a great time for touring activities in the wilderness in the region.

2/ Adventure Tours

The lowland of Northern Vietnam including Hanoi, Halong Bay and Ninh Binh is a good place for general adventure tours as the temperatures are more likely to be very pleasant in this region. And it is more likely that northern Vietnam has sunshine or cloudy weather in most of the month.

There may be one typhoon/tropical depression or two in Vietnam in October but they often make landfall in the Central Coast rather than in northern Vietnam due to the presence of the cool air.

In the Central Coast of Vietnam it is more likely to be pleasant temperatures with long-lasting rain. It is still fine to travel in the coastal region, but if you want to venture to the western mountains, then exercise caution is advised.

In the Central Highlands, more rain and more heavy rain pose serious threats of landslides and flash floods. Still, the rainfalls vary from year to year : more rain in some year, and less rain and relatively dry air in some other year. In a dry year, then it is a great time for adventure trips in the Central Highlands.

Southern Vietnam is to experience pleasant temperatures most of the month. Still, October and November are great months to experience the flood season of the Mekong River where typical life on the water provides opportunities for fantastic experiences : lovely photos, abundant wildlife, amazing food...

3/ Birding Trips and Bird Watching Tours

October is among the best time for birding in the North of Vietnam and in southern Vietnam. Should it be a dry year, then there is not much rain in the Central Highlands and it should be a great time to go birdwatching in this region, too.

October is not a good time to go birding in the Central Region of Vietnam due to frequent rain and thick fog in the mountains.

In northern Vietnam, it is a very pleasant time with lovely breezes and temperatures. Birds including resident species and migratory ones are active and gregarious in October. Your birding in northern Vietnam is more likely to be great experiences.

October is also a good time for birding in southern Vietnam given the flood season of the Mekong River, hence more abudant food available for birds. There may be rain in the region, but it is more likely short-lived rain which should not negatively have impact on your birding tours.

In the Central Highlands of Vietnam, it is supposed to be high rainy season. But in hindsight, there are years that it is very dry and there are years that it is rainy and wet. Should it be dry a year, then birding in the Central Highlands of Vietnam promises wonderful experiences.

Birding sites in Vietnam in October :

- Cuc Phuong National Park (Ninh Binh) : : resident birds mostly.

- Van Long Nature Reserve  (Ninh Binh): resident storks and waterfowls.

- Xuan Thuy National Park in Nam Dinh Province : water birds.

- Da Lat, Bidoup Nui Ba National Park, Deo Nui Sam at Di Linh (Lam Dong, Central Highlands) : among the best time for birding here should it be a dry year.

- Cat Tien National Park (Dong Nai, Southern Vietnam) : October is among the best times for birdwatching at Cat Tien National Park given the pleasant temperatures and presence of many bird species : resident and migratory species.

4/ Family Tours

Generally speaking, families should have a good time traveling in Vietnam in October, provided you do not travel to the northern mountains, mountains in the Central Coast, or to the Central Highlands. If you plan for a family tour in the lowland of northern Vietnam, in the Central Coast of Vietnam and in southern Vietnam, you should enjoy your trip.

5/ Island Holidays

October is not really a recommended time to make trips to the islands in Vietnam. The reason is the sea is often rough, and in case of typhoons or tropical depressions, travel between the inland and the islands are disrupted for a few days.

6/ Beach Vacations

In Northern Vietnam, Sam Son Beach, Cua Lo Beach or the beaches on islands in Northern Vietnam have pleasant temperatures ; rough sea is expected though. The beaches are not crowded this month.

And those beaches in the South of the Central Coast have cloudy weather alternated with rainy weather, with pleasant temperatures : Quy Nhon, Tuy Hoa, Ninh Chu, Mui Ne, Phan Thiet.

If you travel to Southern Vietnam then you October try Vung Tau Beach, Long Hai Beach and Ho Tram Beach (all in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province). You can have pleasant temperatures but expect more cloudy days or frequent rain.

Because October is not really a busy time for the beaches in Vietnam, you won’t have big problems with the crowds then.
