Hung Yen is a province in the Red River Delta. The capital of the province is Hung Yen City, 60km southeast of Hanoi. Nowadays Hung Yen is a modern province with great infrastructure, great road system and lots of industrial parks. Yet, the traditional values are well preserved in the architecture, in village life, in handicraft villages and village customs.
Thanks to convenient transport by waterways, the Ancient Town of Pho Hien (in Hung Yen City now) was once among the busiest trading ports in Vietnam. Besides, there are quite a few villages with traditional occupations and customs which offer unique charm of the province to the visitors: water puppet, bonsai villages, flower villages...
What To See, Tourist Attractions In Hung Yen
1/ Pho Hien Ancient Town
Pho Hien started its history from 1471 when King Le Thanh Tong issued his administration of 12 units of the whole Dai Viet Kingdom. From the 16th century, Pho Hien gradually became an international trading town by the Red River. The town was a trading hub and a transit port for cargo to travel between Thang Long Capital and other places in the kingdom as well as in the world.
Pho Hien experienced its peak prosperity in the 17th century and was visited by merchants from India, China, Holland, England, Japan… Merchants from Europe and Asia also set up branches of their businesses in Pho Hien. It was not only business, foreign traders also brought along their religion and culture to Pho Hien.
Apart from foreign merchants, Pho Hien attracted a large number of craftsmen and merchants from different regions in northern Vietnam (Dang Ngoai then). And the town was a big urban settlement in northern Vietnam, second only to Thang Long Citadel then.
Pho Hien prosperity declined in the 18th century and ended in the 19th century when the Nguyen took the power and control the whole kingdom, anti-foreigners policies were implemented by the Royal Court. Besides, alluvial soil silted up a large stretch of land by the once riverside of Pho Hien pushing Red River 1km farther from the town of Pho Hien. The riverbed became more shallow and big boats could no more sail up and down the river.
Visiting Pho Hien today, we could still travel back in time and get more ideas of the once prosperous trading port in Northern Vietnam. There are several sites belonging to the old Pho Hien: Temple of Literature of Xich Dang, Hien Pagoda and Community House, Tran Temple, Cuu Thien Huyen Nu Temple,…
2/ Stork Island in Hung Yen City
If you are an avid bird lovers, then you may not want to miss the stork island in Hung Yen City. The lake was created when local craftsmen fetched clay for the pottery and ceramics business at Pho Hien Town back in time. The lake is called Lo Noi and there is an island right in the middle which is covered in dense trees. The lake covers an area of 12 hectares and the island has the area of 4,000m2.
3/ Nom Village
The Nom Village is in Dai Dong Commune, Van Lam District of Hung Yen Province. The village is 30km from Hanoi where you can find what villages in Vietnam were like centuries ago.
The general setting of the village is just so lovely. There are two weathered gates where people pass through for their daily work. Once you pass the gate, there are old houses which line the sides of a series of ponds from one end of the village to the other.
At one end of the village is the Nom Community House, an old building nestled under the thick canopy of a hundred year-old banyan tree with hanging roots. Close to the community house is a several-century-old water well where villagers got clean water for their daily use.
The Nom Village has an ancient Buddhist pagoda built in 1680. Visiting the pagoda, you can learn a lot about the spiritual life of the villagers in the past as well as at present. The pure zen atmosphere of a complex surrounded by ancient buildings and lotus flower pond certainly helps you with lovely relaxing moments.
The pagoda is located on the other side of the Nguyen Duc River. There is a 200-year-old stone bridge spanning the two sides of the river. By the pagoda is a countryside market which remained almost the same as it was centuries ago!
The Nom Village is certainly a treasure, a living museum where you can find out how country life in Vietnam was centuries ago.
