Buon Ma Thuot is the capital city of Dak Lak Province. The city is on the Buon Ma Thuot Plateau also known as the Dak Lak Plateau with elevations from 400-800m above sea level. This is one of a series of plateaus in the Central Highlands of Vietnam.

The name Buon Ma Thuot originates from the name Ama Thuot – the name of a chief of the region once. Buon in local E De language means village. Buon Ma Thuot means the village of Ama Thuot. Buon Ma Thuot is famed in Vietnam for the first quality of coffee.

Weather and Climate

Buon Ma Thuot has a tropical monsoon climate: dry season from mid December through April and rainy season from May through November. It rains heavily in late September through October and sometimes into November. Thanks to high altitudes that the city has cool temperatures all year.

This is a museum now for the prison which was built by the French in the 1930-1931. The prison was where Vietnamese patriots were jailed in 1931-1945 and later in 1954-1975. The prison is 1km from the city center.

The village is 2km from the city center. This is where you learn about the daily life of the villagers, their traditional houses, spiritual life...
