The Kim Hy Nature Reserve was established in 2003 and had the areas adjusted in 2014 with the core zone of 15,715 hectares and the buffer zone of 22,928 hectares. The area of the nature reserve stretches in the district of Na Ri and Bach Thong.

Geography

The terrain of the Kim Hy Nature Reserve includes flat valleys, forested limestone (karst) mountains.

The main water source of the nature reserve is the Ngan Son River which starts in the north of Bac Kan Province and which discharges its water into the Ky Cung River in Lang Son Province. Besides, there are several small streams in the nature reserve with water all year round: Pac Bo, Khuoi Luoc, Khuoi Khoang, Khau Le, Khuoi Sua, Cai...

Flora and Fauna

There are 1,072 vascular plant species at the Kim Hy Nature Reserve of which several species are listed in Vietnam’s Red Book for endangered species and listed as endangered species by The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Those listed in Vietnam’s Red Book for endangered species include:
- Nghiến,
- Trai lý,
- Đinh,
- Lát hoa,
- The Delavay's silver-fir (Delavay's fir Du Sam núi đá, Abies delavayi),
- Coniferous evergreen tree (Keteleeria davidiana, Du sam đá vôi),
- Chinese Douglas-fir  (Pseudotsuga sinensis, Thiết sam giả),
- Lan kim tuyến

At Kim Hy, researches have found 
+ 99 animal species;
+ 256 bird species;
+ 64 reptile species;
+ 39 amphibian species.
Several of the fauna species are listed as endangered by Vietnam and by the IUCN: - François' langur (Trachypithecus francoisi, ), 
- Pygmy slow loris( Cu li nhỏ, Nycticebus pygmaeus) và Sunda slow loris (Cu li lớn, Nycticebus coucang), 
- Rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta), 
- Darf musk deer (Huou Xa Cao Bang or Huou Xa Việt Nam, Moschus berezovskii caobangis, Cao Bang deer), 
- Silver Pheasant  (Lophura nycthemera, Gà lôi trắng),
- Grey Peacock-pheasant (Polyplectron bicalcaratum, Gà tiền mặt vàng )…

Population

There are villages of the Kinh, Dao, Nung, Tay in the area of the Kim Hy Nature Reserve.

Travel Guide, Tourist Attractions, What to see Kim Hy Nature Reserve

1/ Minh Tinh Cave (Thuong Luong and Kim Hy Communes)

Visiting the cave, we have to trek for 3km from the Ke Village. The trekking time is about 1 hour. The Minh Tinh Cave is 3-leveled, 20-40m wide and high, 400m long. The peak of the mountain where the cave is located is 723m.

2/ Bat Cave (Cao Son Commune, Bach Thong District)

To visit this cave we have to trek 9km from Lung Chap Village (Cao Son Commune) which takes 3 hours. The trekking path is on steep mountain slopes.

Alternatively there is another route of 10.5 from Tham Mu Village (An Tinh Commune) that takes 5 hours to trek. The terrain is on steep mountain slopes.

3/ Fairy Cave (Dong Nang Tien)

The cave is located on the Phja Trang Mountain (Elephant Mountain). The cave, which is 50-60m high, goes 60m inside the mountain. There are magnificent stalactites and stalagmites inside.

The mountain is 5km from Yen Lac Town. The cave is across the Khuoi Hai River.

Where to Stay, Accommodations

At the moment there are no guest houses or hotels in the area. Visiting the Kim Hy Nature Reserve we can ask local people for overnight stay. The facilities are poor. Better accommodations can be found in Bac Kan City.

How to get there

Kim Hy Nature Reserve is 70km northeast of Bac Kan City via Route 3 (south of Bac Kan City) and Route 279, this route is in better conditions. Alternatively, it is possible to travel to Kim Hy Nature Reserve via Route 3 (north of Bac Kan City) and turn into Route 279 which is 60km; this way the Route 279 is not in good conditions.
