The Tam Giang - Cau Hai Nature Reserve is a series of lagoons and lakes by the seaside which stretch for 68km in Phong Dien, Quang Dien, Phu Vang, Phu Loc Districts and in Huong Tra Town of Thua Thien Hue Province, in the Central Coast of Vietnam.

The Tam Giang – Cau Hai was established as a nature reserve to protect the amazing diverse ecosystem in the area. The lagoons in the Tam Giang – Cau Hai Nature Reserve receives fresh water from several rivers in the region: O Lau, Perfume, Truoi, An Cuu… and sea water via two estuaries: Thuan An and Tu Hien.

Flora

The nature reserve has fresh water sources, and sea water which make it natural habitats for several species which require this special living environment. Recent statistics show that there are

+ 221 plankton (plankter) species,

+ 46 alga species,

+ 18 aqua-vascular species (including 7 seaweed species and 11 fresh water weed species),

+ 31 vascular species (7 species in brackish water).

Fauna

+ 66 nekton (necton) species,

+ 46 benthic species (benthos, seafloor, bottom feeder),

+ 230 fish species;

+ 73 bird species of which 34 migratory species (with annual individual may be reaching over 20,000 birds in the winter time), and 39 sedentary (resident) species.

Climate

Tam Giang - Cau Hai Nature Reserve is in a tropical monsoon climatic region with two seasons: dry season from late January to April and rainy season from May through December. It especially rains heavily in late September through November; during this period there may be typhoons hitting the Central Coast causing floods in several areas.

The temperatures are high in late March through July (getting above 40oC often), and start getting lower from mid August. The temperatures are pleasant (20-30oc) in September – November, cool (18-23oC) in December – February.

Accommodation, Where to stay

There are luxury beach hotels and resorts on the Thuan An Beach, Cau Hai Lagoon. There are no hotels in the other ares in the nature reserve. It is possible to hire a hut or stay with local fishermen; the facilities are poor.

Restaurants, Where to eat

There are some seaside restaurants offering great seafood. It is possible to buy foodstuff and ask locals to cook for us.

How to get there and away

1/ From Hue City

The shortest route is to the Thuan An Beach, 12km northeast of Hue.

2/ From Hue Phu Bai Airport

The provincial route No. 2 to the Thuy Tu Lagoon of the nature reserve is 20km northeast.

3/ From the Lang Co Beach

Follow Route 1A northwest fo 35km then it is Cau Hai Lagoon.


There are also several routes to the north of the nature reserve to the Tam Giang Lagoon which is north of Hue, close to Quang Tri Province. The seaside route is very scenic and quiet.
