It is worth noting that with global climate change, and Vietnam is a long and skinny country with a long coastline, the weather patterns in Vietnam in a given year may be drastically different from the norm nowadays.
2025 passed with lot of unusual weather patterns that you may want to refer to our January weather review.
In January 2026, there were unusual weather patterns in Vietnam:
- Northern Vietnam experienced a winter with mostly dry weather and perfectly pleasant temperatures, much more like normal autumnal temperatures. There were a couple of times that the winter monsoon brought real cold temperatures in the North which lasted 3-5 days each only.
- The Central Coast of Vietnam entered dry season with sun and pleasant temperatures from the beginning of January 2026, which is very unusual. It is normal that cloudy weather persists with some light rain in the Central Coast in January and February.
- The Central Highlands and southern Vietnam experienced lowest recorded temperatures in January: 8oC and 14.3oC respectively. Saigon Ho Chi Minh City had the lowest temperature of 17oC, unusual if not never before.
- There was unseasonal and heavy rain in southern Vietnam a couple of times.
In February 2026, there were unusual weather patterns in Vietnam:
- There were unseasonal rain in southern Vietnam alternated by days with warm temperatures.
What to Expect of the Weather in Vietnam in March
Northern Vietnam often has dry weather, but with moist air, and with pleasant temperatures alternated. It is because there are days that either the Northeasterly Monsoon tends to blow along the coast to Vietnam, or because the Southeasterly Monsoon suddenly becomes active and blow inland from the sea. It is also normal the the North has drizzles (extremely light rain) which makes the air quite moist.
The Central Coast normally enters the dry season with mostly pleasant temperatures and with either sun or clouds.
The Central Highlands is expected to have dry weather with pleasant temperatures.
Southern Vietnam is expected to have dry weather with warm or hot temperatures.
For bird watchers, March is a great time, among the best times, for birding in Vietnam. But it is worth noting that some water bird species will have started returning to their resident places in March which makes some places quieter than during the winter months.
The Central Coast enjoys brief period that is perfect for watching birds.
The Central Highlands and southern Vietnam are also great places for watching birds in March. But there are days that the temperatures may get quite warm or hot at mid day in southern Vietnam that makes it really quiet and bird-watchers are advised to have a mid day break.
Generally speaking, there are several migratory birds in all over Vietnam in March.

In March, northern Vietnam has mostly pleasant temperatures. It is more likely dry in this region in March, but it is also possible that there are light drizzles at times and the air is often moist in the lowland. It is normal to have fog and mist in the lowland and in the mountains.
In the Central Coast of Vietnam, March is the dry season with pleasant temperatures. It is more likely to have clouds and sun.
The Central Highlands and South of Vietnam are in the dry season in March. The temperatures are pleasant in the Central Highlands, and mostly warm in southern Vietnam.
2/ Monsoons in Vietnam in March
The prevalent winds which affect different places in Vietnam in March:
- The Southeasterly Wind, which affects northern Vietnam, causes pleasant temperatures, moist air.
- The Northeasterly Monsoon which come from Siberia or Tibet and which causes pleasant temperatures in northern Vietnam and pleasant temperatures in the Central Coast of Vietnam.
The Northreasterly Wind is too weak in March and this causes dry weather in the Central Highlands and in southern Vietnam given that the Southwesterly Monsoon does not start to blow yet.
The Northeasterly Monsoon is weak in March, hence mostly calm sea all over Vietnam and sea exploration tours start operating.

March is spring in northern Vietnam with more likely dry weather but moist air with pleasant temperatures. This is the trekking and mountain hiking season in the North. The clouds on high mountains in the far northern Vietnam are just ethereal in March.
March is also a good time for trekking tours or mountain hiking trips in the Central Highlands of Vietnam.
2/ Adventure Tours
The lowland of Northern Vietnam including Hanoi, Halong Bay and Ninh Binh is a good place for general adventure holidays in March.
The Central Coast of Vietnam normally enjoys the best weather of a year in March: sun, clouds and pleasant temperatures. There is no doubt March is the best time traveling in the Central Region of Vietnam.
In the Central Highlands, it is dry season. All adventure tours should bring great experiences.
Southern Vietnam is to experience warm or hot temperatures mostly. All adventure tours such as walking, cultural exploration, boat trips... are operable. If you do not mind the heat, this is among the best time to visit southern Vietnam. Ensure to drink enough water and it is advised to avoid activities at mid day.
3/ Birding Trips and Bird Watching Tours
March is still in bird migration season, but some migratory bird species have started making a return trip back to their resident places from Vietnam. The more likely beautiful weather in the North, in the Central Highlands and in the South of Vietnam should offer great birding and wildlife spotting tours in Vietnam this month. This is often the best among months (along with January, February) of the year for bird watching in Vietnam.
March is also the best time for birding in the Central Coast of Vietnam: dry weather, perfect temperatures, amazingly wide range of bird species who are most gregrarious during this time.
March is a great time for bird watching in the Central Highlands and in southern Vietnam. It is dry weather mostly in these two regions. The temperatures in the Central Highlands are just perfect for all outdoor activities. This is definitely among the best time for birdwatching in southern Vietnam too, but you may want to have a mid day break when the temperatures are quite high sometimes.

March is a good time to make trips to the islands in Vietnam. The reason is the sea is calm, and sea exploration tours are starting to be operational after the rough sea season in the winter.
6/ Beach Vacations
March is a great time for beach holidays in northern Vietnam and the Central Coast of Vietnam, in the South of the Central Coast of Vietnam, and in southern Vietnam. Expect crowded beaches in the south though.
In Northern Vietnam and North of the Central Coast of Vietnam, Sam Son Beach, Cua Lo Beach or the beaches on islands in Northern Vietnam are good choices.
And those beaches in the South of the Central Coast have mostly dry and sunny weather, and with pleasant temperatures : Da Nang, Hoi An, Quy Nhon, Tuy Hoa, Ninh Chu, Mui Ne, Phan Thiet.
If you travel to Southern Vietnam in March, then try Vung Tau Beach, Long Hai Beach and Ho Tram Beach (all in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province). You should have pleasant temperatures mostly.
