The specific epithet sinensis is Modern Latin for "Chinese".

The white-shouldered starling (Sturnia sinensis) is a species of bird in the starling family Sturnidae. 
The bird breeds in southern China and northern Vietnam, winters in Southeast Asia and ca be found in: Brunei, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, South Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

The genus name Sturnia is from Latin sturnus meaning "starling".
