Common stonechat is the name used for the Saxicola species Saxicola torquatus of the Old World flycatcher family Muscicapidae.

 


The stonechats or chats, is a genus of 15 species of small passerine birds restricted to the Old World: ground-feeding, strong migratory.
Saxicola in Latin: saxum, rock + incola, dwelling in. 
torquatus: Latin torquis (“a twisted neck chain, necklace, collar”), from torqueō (“to turn, twist, bend”), Latin torquatus collared (torques collar).
