My Son Cham Ruins was once the Holyland of the Champa Kingdom, which was thriving in most of the Central Coast of Vietnam from the 2nd to the 13th century A.D.

History

The Cham People followed Hinduism, Muslim and Buddhism but Hinduism was most influential and was the state religion for most of the time. The Kings of the Champa Kingdoms successively built temple towers at My Son to worship their Hindu God – Shiva. The works were carried out actively from the 4th to the 13th centuries C.E.

Natural disasters and wars especially heavy aerials bombings by the Americans during the Vietnam War destroyed much of the temples at My Son. Still, through the archaeological remains and epitaphs at My Son that the history of the Champa Kingdom, the Cham Arts and Culture, the influence of outside cultures to the indigenous cultures,.. are vividly depicted and understood. My Son Sanctuary is on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Location

The site of My Son is on elevated land of a valley surrounded by two ranges of mountains in Duy Xuyen, Quang Nam Province, Central Vietnam. My Son was the ancestral homeland of the Cham Kings – Dua Clan, and it was close to Tra Kieu (Simhapura), the capital of the Kingdom back then.

Achitecture

The remarkable Tower Temples of My Son Sanctuary represent the greatness and purity of Mount Meru – the mystical sacred home of Hindu gods. Different temple has different architectural designs but they show common features: being built with fired bricks, stone pillars; having intricate and elegant sandstone bas reliefs; unknown and highly sophisticated construction techniques and materials…

Tours to My Son Cham Ruins
