The bird is found in Bangladesh, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam.
The genus name Dryobates is from the Greek compound word: 'woodland walker'.
The origin is from δρῦς : drus (genitive δρυός : dryós) meaning woodland and -βάτης : -bátēs meaning walker.
