Travel Guide Overview to Ba Be Lake and Ba Be National Park, Bac Kan
The park is comprised of
- The Ba Be Lake in the center, the lake is 150m above sea level, the averaged depth of the lake ranges from 17-23m, the deepest spot is 29m;
- A system of limestone mountains, forests on these mountains and valleys amid the mountains surrounding the lake;
- The Nang River to the north of the Ba Be Lake;
- The 3 rivers to the south of the Ba Be Lake: Cho Leng, Bo Lu, Ta Han.
The Nang River starts its course in Cao Bang – Bac Kan flows southwards then eastwards past the northern top of the Ba Be Lake and discharges its water into the Gam River.
During the rainy season (May-October), there are times that the Nang River water level is higher than that of the Ba Be Lake: the water flows from the Nang River into the Ba Be Lake which could make the water level of the lake 2-3m higher than normal.
For the rest of the year, the 3 rivers to the south discharge their water into the Ba Be Lake then the water flows into the Nang River. The constant motion of water makes the water body of the Ba Be Lake fresh all year round and it makes the area the habitat of amazing flora and fauna.
A fantastic thing about the Ba Be Lake is that it is a lake high in the limestone mountains. While there are several caves and underwater caves but there is always abundant water in the lake and it never runs out of water. Also, the forested area of the Ba Be National Park accounts for 73.68% of the total land area of the national park. Most of the forest here is tropical rain forest.
