Halong Bay has a tropical monsoon climate with warm sea water and humid summer. There are four seasons in Halong Bay and in each season, Halong Bay looks different. Depending on your individual interests you may pick a time that suits you best.
1/ December – February
This is winter time in Halong Bay and often it is overcast skies and the temperatures are low (below 10oC – 20oc). The winter monsoon (Northeasterly Wind) is often strong. There may be some light rain before and during a new spell of the cold wind arrival. It may be misty for some days in Halong Bay but some professional photographers love this time the most, because it is soft lighting and Halong bears a mysterious charm.
This is also the busiest time for tourism in Vietnam and you may take into account the prices before making decisions. Late January and early February is the Vietnamese Lunar New Year (Tet) which may impact travels in the country as well as travel services.
People do not normally swim at this time.
2/ March – April
Halong Bay may be just too foggy in the last ten days of March and the first ten days of April. This is spring in Halong Bay and there are quite a few transitions related to the different winds, sea water temperatures, the presence of sunshine… Other than the mentioned period, it is mostly dry and pleasant temperatures with light sunshine on the bay. There are some few days with clear skies though.
Late March and late April, early May are times that Vietnam has big holidays. It is crowded in most tourist spots, hence higher prices.
People start swimming.
3/ May - June
It is hot but Halong Bay is mostly clear and full of sunshine. You love your photos of Halong Bay in strong sunlight then you visit the bay at this time. It is also a busy time for Vietnamese domestic tourist season so you expect Halong Bay overcrowded often.
The beaches are crowded with swimmers.
4/ July
It is hot and it is high time for Vietnamese tourist season. There may be some typhoons before/during/after which cruises are forbidden on Halong Bay.

5/ August
It is still warm but the temperatures are more tolerable and autumn is just around the corner from the end of August which makes Halong Bay just lovely. On some days Halong Bay may have thin mist and the bay may be clear on some other days. There may be typhoons affecting Halong Bay and cruises are not allowed during the time.
School holidays end in August and Halong Bay is not that busy with Vietnamese tourists as in the summer.
6/ September – October
Autumn in Halong Bay the most beautiful moments of the year with clear skies and soft lighting which make photography of the bay just as charming as ever! School holidays are over and it is a quiet time for Halong Bay. But there may be typhoons in September that may stop boats from cruising for a few days each time!
7/ November
Winter starts on Halong Bay with very strong winds, cold temperatures. Each time there is a new spell of cold wind, then it rains for a few days on Halong Bay. Expect overcast skies most of the time. This is also the busiest time for tourism on Halong Bay which often results in booked out services and higher prices.
