Six subspecies recognised are:

  Caprimulgus affinis amoyensis, 
  Caprimulgus affinis stictomus, 
  Caprimulgus affinis affinis, 
  Caprimulgus affinis timorensis and 
  Caprimulgus affinis propinquus


The savanna nightjar (Caprimulgus affinis), also known as allied nightjar or Franklin's nightjar, is a species of nightjar found in South and Southeast Asia. 

Caprimulgus is derived from the Latin capra, "nanny goat", and mulgere, "to milk".
affinis is from Latin adfinis or affinis meaning "related" or "allied".
