Fantails are small insectivorous songbirds of the genus Rhipidura in the family Rhipiduridae, native to Australasia, Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent.
The genus name combines the Ancient Greek rhipis, rhipidos meaning "fan" with "oura" meaning "tail".
