Mai Chau is the name of a lovely district of Hoa Binh Province with secret valleys, untouched forest, Thai villages…
Travel Guide to Mai Chau Hoa Binh Weather
Mai Chau is surrounded by ranges of high mountains. Coming out of Mai Chau, the road either goes up to the Moc Chau Plateau with elevation of 1,000m above sea level the one side; on the other side, the road goes up to the Thung Khe Mountain pass of 700-800m above sea level.
There is another secret route which travels along the riverside of the Ma River to the Pu Luong Nature Reserve which is also surrounded by high mountains. Mai Chau is a lovely isolated place and the Thai have chosen to settle down here for several hundred years!
Being among the first places in Vietnam open to foreign visitors, Mai Chau has remained a popular place since. In this isolated valley, there are seasons and each of the seasons in Mai Chau has its own charm.
Due to the geographical location and terrain that Mai Chau has a tropical monsoon climate but with some variations. There are two seasons in Mai Chau: dry season from November through April and rainy season from May through October.
1/ November through February
It is either cool or cold in Mai Chau and it is dry. This is winter time in northern Vietnam and mostly it is dry all over. The North may experience some light rain just before, during and right after each spell of cold winter monsoon. But Mai Chau is mostly dry even under influence by the Northeasterly Wind (winter monsoon). This is because is located to the southwest of Hanoi and surrounded by high mountains.
From late December through February, there are peach and plum blossoms all over the valley.
2/ March – April
There are days in late February, March and early April that there are conflicting winds in northern Vietnam causing the air moist, some light drizzles. But Mai Chau is under the influence of the feuhn wind blowing from Laos; this feuhn wind is dry and warm and hence dry days in Mai Chau and pleasant temperatures. This time it is drill chilly, and sometimes wet in the Red River Delta.
3/ May – August
It is often dry and hot in May. It gets hotter in June and July and gets more tolerable and pleasant in August. There may be short-lived rain in June-August and there are often destructive rains each time there is a typhoon impacting northern Vietnam. Each year Vietnam has more or fewer than 10 typhoons and half go to the North and the other go to the Central Coast.
The rice in Mai Chau turns into yellow colors in May which offer great photos. It is flooded fields in Mai Chau in late June and rice transplanting season in July.
4/ September – October
There may be typhoons which cause torrential lingering rain in September and early October. Other than these times, it is often dry. During these two months the temperatures are very pleasant in Mai Chau. This period is autumn in northern Vietnam.
The rice fields in Mai Chau turn into golden colors in October which make your photo amazing! Unless in the time of a typhoon this is the best season in Mai Chau.
