Tuyen Quang is a mountainous province in the Northeast of Vietnam, 155km from Hanoi. Tuyen Quang offers fresh countryside landscape, untouched nature reserves and historical attractions. The province was once part of the ATK (Safe Zone) where the Viet Minh’s Headquarters was located during the Franco – Viet Minh War. Historical sites can be visited nowadays still.

1/ Tan Trao

Tan Trao was where the First National Assembly of Vietnam was established and had the first meeting to decide that it was the right moment to start a General Revolt – the August Revolution which later led to the Declaration of Independence of Vietnam on 2-September-1945 at the Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi. The history of Vietnam changed the course from a colony to an independent country with political and military elements.

Besides, Tan Trao was where the OSS (or later CIA) got some time working alongside with President Ho Chi Minh.

2/ Na Hang (also called Tuyen Quang) Reservoir

The reservoir stretches in Chiem Hoa and Lam Binh Districts of Tuyen Quang with several islands and mountains which offer captivating landscape. There are several Tay ethnic villages around the lake whose culture is still as traditional as ever.

Visiting the lake, you can have a boat trip to take in the amazing natural landscape or have relaxing kayaking time.

3/ Ethnic villages

Several Tay villages by the Na Hang Reservoir offer homestay to the visitors with memorable cultural experiences. There are several tours that you may like to try like cycling through Tay villages at Thuong Lam, working in the rice fields with local farmers, learning to cook traditional food,… The natural landscape in Na Hang and Lam Binh includes several breathtaking mountains and valleys.

How To Get To Tuyen Quang

1/ From Hanoi via Route 2 and Route 2C

The road is in good condition but it is busy sometimes. From Hanoi, you travel via Route 2 to Vinh Yen City (Vinh Phuc) where you can continue either via Route 2 through Phu Tho, then Tuyen Quang City or turn into Route 2C to Son Duong District (Tuyen Quang), then travel further to Tuyen Quang City. The latter route offers lovely mountainscape along the Tam Dao Mountain Range. There are several detours to avoid busy traffic through busy towns or cities on the way which make it very convenient.

2/ From Ha Giang via Route 2

Route 2 from Ha Giang to Tuyen Quang is in good condition and you will travel along the riverside of the Lo River with nice scenery most of the way.

3/From Thai Nguyen via Route 37

The road travel past the Nui Coc Lake with some lovely mountainscape along the way. The traffic is mostly easy.

4/From Bac Kan (Ba Be National Park) via Route 279

The road in horrendous condition yet offers captivating landscape. You’ll be on a high mountain road most of the time with bird eye’s views of the natural landscape around.

5/From Yen Bai via Route 37

The short route from Yen Bai City to Tuyen Quang City is in fine condition with some hilly parts.
