Aethopyga is a genus of birds in the sunbird family Nectariniidae. 
Nectariniidae: New Latin, from Nectarinia, type genus + -idae.
The name combines the Ancient Greek aithos meaning "fire" or "burning heat" with puge meaning "rump".

Le nom de cette famille vient du genre Nectarinia qui tire son nom du régime alimentaire de ces oiseaux, le nectar des fleurs.

Le nom « souïmanga » est d'origine malgache. Il peut s'écrire sans trèma, avec ou sans tiret.
Le nom des arachnothères (ou arachnotères) est la francisation du nom de genre Arachnothera, tueur ou chasseur d'araignées que traduit l'anglais «spiderhunter».
