The great slaty woodpecker (Mulleripicus pulverulentus) is a species of bird in the family Picidae.

The genus name Mulleripicus honours the German naturalist Salomon Müller.
pulverulenta, pulverulentus: Latin pulverulentus dusty, powdered (from pulvis dust).

Mulleripicus is a genus of birds in the woodpecker family Picidae, found in South and Southeast Asia. 
The genus forms part of the woodpecker subfamily Picinae, and has a sister relationship to the genus Dryocopus.
