  • Alcedinidae

    Kingfishers are a family, the Alcedinidae, of small to medium-sized, brightly colored birds in the order Coraciiformes.

    The name is from Latin alcēdō, from Ancient Greek ἀλκυών (alkuṓn): halcyon, kingfisher.

    Kingfishers have three sub families:
    - Alcedininae (River kingfishers or pygmy kingfishers)

  • Alcedo

    Alcedo is a genus of birds in the kingfisher subfamily Alcedininae.
    The name is from Latin alcēdō, from Ancient Greek ἀλκυών (alkuṓn): halcyon, kingfisher.

    1/ Common kingfisher, also known as the Eurasian kingfisher and river kingfisher (Bồng chanh, Alcedo atthis)
    Atthis, a beautiful young woman of Lesbos, and favourite of Sappho.
    2/ Blyth's kingfisher (Bồng chanh rừng, Alcedo hercules)
    3/ Blue-eared kingfisher (Bói cá tai lam or tai xanh, Alcedo meninting)

  • Ceryle

    The water kingfishers or Cerylinae are one of the three subfamilies of kingfishers, and are also known as the cerylid kingfishers.

    1/ Pied kingfisher (Bói cá nhỏ, Ceryle rudis)
    The pied kingfisher (Ceryle rudis) is a species of water kingfisher widely distributed across Africa and Asia.


    Alcedo, Alcedinidae: Latin word for kingfisher. 
    The genus Ceryle which is from Greek kerulos bird mentioned by Aristotle,.. but not further identified but probably mythical and associated with the halcyon, a kingfisher.

  • Ceyx

    Ceyx is an Old World genus of river kingfishers. These kingfishers are found from South East Asia to the Solomon Islands.

    1/ Oriental dwarf kingfisher, also known as the black-backed kingfisher or three-toed kingfisher (Bồng chanh đỏ, Ceyx erithaca)

  • Halcyon

    Halcyon is a genus of the tree kingfishers, near passerine birds in the subfamily Halcyoninae.

    1/ Black-capped kingfisher (Sả đầu đen, Halcyon pileata) 
    2/  White-throated kingfisher (Sả đầu nâu, Halcyon smyrnensis)
    3/ Ruddy kingfisher (Sả hung, Halcyon coromanda)
    4/ Collared kingfisher(Sả khoang cổ, Todiramphus chloris), also white-collared kingfisher, black-masked kingfisher or mangrove kingfisher 

  • Lacedo

    Lacedo is a genus of tree kingfishers that are resident in in lowland tropical forests of southeast Asia.

    1/ Banded kingfisher (Sả vằn, Lacedo pulchella)

  • Megaceryle

    The water kingfishers or Cerylinae are one of the three subfamilies of kingfishers, and are also known as the cerylid kingfishers.

    1/ Crested kingfisher (Bói cá mào or Bói cá lớn, Megaceryle lugubris) 


    Alcedo, Alcedinidae: Latin word for kingfisher. 
    Megaceryle is from the Ancient Greek megas, "great", and the existing genus Ceryle which is from Greek kerulos bird mentioned by Aristotle,.. but not further identified but probably mythical and associated with the halcyon, a kingfisher.

  • Pelargopsis

    Pelargopsis is a genus of tree kingfishers that are resident in tropical south Asia from India and Sri Lanka to Indonesia.

    1/ Stork-billed kingfisher (Pelargopsis capensis)
