Cinclidae, which is comprised of one genus Cinclus, is a bird family of the order Passeriformes. A study in 2002 showed that the dipper family, Cinclidae, is most closely related to the thrush family, Turdidae.

Cinclus, commonly known as dippers, is the only genus in the family Cinclidae of the order Passeriformes.
The name cinclus is from the Ancient Greek word kinklos that was used to describe small tail-wagging birds that resided near water.
