Kampong Thom Province is situated to the east of the Tonle Sap Lake and is home to many important Pre-Angkorian sites including Sombor Prei Kuk Temple.. The provincial capital of the province is Kampong Thom Town, 165 km from Phnom Penh and 151 km from Siem Reap. Kampong Thom is a popular stopover for trips between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap and could be used as the base to explore the remote temples such as Preah Khan and Prasat Preah Vihear.
